Types Of Ants In Our Area
Carpenter Ants
Biology
Carpenter ants, typically black or red, do not eat wood but excavate it to build their nests. They range in size from 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch. Colonies can house thousands of ants, with a single queen laying eggs that develop into workers, soldiers, and reproductive ants.
Identification
- Size: Large ants, 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch.
- Color: Mostly black, sometimes red or a combination.
- Behavior: Seen foraging for food, primarily at night. Look for sawdust-like material near nesting sites.
Treating carpenter ants is more advanced and urgent than other ants because they nest in wood by carving it out on the inside, weakening the wood. If you notice these ants on your property something must be done quickly.
Odorous House Ants (OHA)
Biology
Odorous house ants are small, dark brown to black ants, about 1/8 inch long. They emit a rotten coconut smell when crushed. Colonies can have multiple queens and thousands of workers, nesting in a variety of locations indoors and outdoors.
Identification
- Size: Around 1/8 inch long.
- Color: Dark brown to black.
- Behavior: Trails of ants searching for sweets and water, distinctive odor when crushed.
Treating odorous house ants is more advanced due to their large colonies with multiple queens. This requires targeted baiting and thorough inspections to locate all nesting sites, both inside and outside structures. Sometimes in a situation where they have really impacted the structure it can take up to 7 weeks to fully eliminate.
Pavement Ants
Biology
Pavement ants are small, about 1/8 inch long, and dark brown to black. They nest under sidewalks, driveways, and building foundations, foraging indoors for food.
Identification
- Size: Around 1/8 inch, just like the OHA
- Color: Dark brown to black, just like the OHA
- Behavior: However, unlike the OHA, pavement ants are found near pavements, with visible dirt mounds near nest entrances.
Effective treatment involves targeting the entire colony with baits and non-repellent insecticides, requiring thorough inspection and persistent follow-up.
